Now he's the youngest looking 89-year-old ever. Crazy to think he hasn't thrown a pitch in almost 60 years.

And let’s not forget the ‘65 WS, when he declined to pitch the opening game because it conflicted with Yom Kippur. Drysdale replaced him and didn’t get out of the 3rd inning, saying later to his manager Walter Alston, “I bet you wish I was Jewish, too.”

On a Friday night in November of '66, as I was standing on the sidelines as a second string receiver for Oratory Prep's last football team, a schoolmate who was a Giant fan, called out to me with a grin and said, "Hey Monte, Koufax retired today!" I was more crushed about that shocking news than the fact that we lost a squeaker to Harrison High School! Sandy is still my idol.
