Dammit, Wayne. I started bawling halfway through and haven't stopped. What a beautiful story, well told. You know how much I adore your writing but this is among the best things you've written. You probably know I'm also a survivor and I just want to send a bucket of big wishes to your big bro. What a story. He sounds awesome. Also, shout out to Ray Ridder and Steve Kerr -- I got to work with both when I was covering the Clips, particular Ray who at the time was working for the Lakers. Two better people would be hard to find in the NBA and that's saying a lot.
What an amazing story about an amazing person who I had the pleasure of meeting many years ago. A story about heart and soul that is so moving and brought to life by your beautiful writing. Thanks so much for sharing.
Wow, Wayne. Your brother is a fighter and an inspiration. And this piece is such an affectionate celebration of him and your relationship. A pleasure to read.
Whenever I think you cannot outdo yourself you do! With every chance you get to honor, beyond their wildest dreams, so many everyday heroes, you make it happen!
You have a way of telling a story that causes us to get chills, cry, and hold our hearts, because we can identify as humans with our vulnerabilities and our challenges!
I stood in the glaring sun reading the entire piece, you were right I loved it and of course it made me love and respect, brother Frank, even more, and again if that is possible, it made me love, Love you even more!
I had chills and cried when I completed the story and now I will pass it on for others to immerse themselves in and appreciate.
This I have no doubt will alter your brother's life, for the rest of his life!
And, I wish I had a big brother that got me red Converse sneakers( with of course zero ankle support), the closest we came to that was us three boys getting PF flyers, haha !!
What a great story of brotherhood. Frank, I'm jealous of you living in Southern California. I went to USC for two years and fell in love with the area. Always wanted to live there but life took me back to the East Coast.
Saw Franks picture and knew I had to read your latest. Then I got your text. Loved playing on that court. What a wonderful tribute to a great big brother. You two are so fortunate to still be on each other’s lives. Not a day goes by…
Wow! I always say that Wayne is the best little brother in the world. This proves it. Those Converse, size 3, sure were a good investment. xo
All I did was report the truth. xo
Nothing but net, Wayne. Goes directly into the Coffey pantheon next to your piece on Sam.
Thanks very much, Dave. if you ever take a road trip to Venice Beach, don't play H-O-R-S-E with that boy.

So true about Ray and Steve, Elizabeth. Thanks for your loyal reading and kind words. I had some wonderful material to work with, for sure.
I’ve read this and another very similar version 20-maybe-25 times. I cry every time
"His name is Frank Coffey, and he is my brother." Aye yi yi I can only dream of being the writer you are. Great, great piece.
Thank you so much, Jen.

Thanks, Debbie. He's a medical marvel - and he can shoot a little, too.:)
Oh for goodness sake, you got me cryin’, again… love my Coffey cousins!
Right back at you, Claudia.🩵
Thank you for sharing your brother Frank’s story. You surely do have an amazing family!

Sometimes, meeting your hero is a letdown. Sometimes, it is amazing.
Your brother's meeting with his hero sounds like it was amazing.
It also sounds like you had the great luck to grow up with your hero in your home.
Great story, and thanks for sharing it.
Thanks very much, Mark. I did.

Thanks for reading, Joe. If you go back, maybe Mr. No Miss can show you around.:)
Funny because I was there last summer and walked Venice Beach and saw some guys playing. Maybe one was your brother.
If he didn't miss much, it might've been him.
Gold, dude…
