The start of the 2024 baseball season stirred a cherished memory, and made for a new friend. I hope you enjoy it. Please consider subscribing if you like this kind of storytelling. Thank for reading.
Please don’t hold it against me that I ran on the field. I still feel guilty about it. If you need a character reference, Samanthat Coffey might - might - give you one.
I remember you talking about those blades of grass at school! This walk down memory lane was perfect timing as I had just dropped off at the Denver airport a fellow classmate who was visiting to take in the Rangers vs Avalanche on Thursday.
That's too funny, Sal. I took very good care of that little patch of grass. It was between two trees in our backyard on Bunkerhill Drive. When we sold the house in 1975, I neglected to tell anyone about the precious Shea Stadium keepsake out back. It would've added at least $5 to the price.
My memories of those summer evenings were of my parents playing cards around the kitchen table listening to the Mets (Dad was a fervent Yankee hater (Go Sox!)). Thanks for the smile.
Another great story, “Joe”, not that I ever followed baseball.
I always love your human angles and juxtaposition of personal stuff with the big stuff of the world - Vietnam and Family, in this case, framed by outrageous achievements.
Another great story about your Mets. The different perspectives from those involved are amazing…just like the ‘69 Mets. I remember the passion you had for that team.

It was a magical time, and an important time in my life when not a lot of good things were going on. Sports can do that for you, if you are lucky.
